Children’s Hospice Week: partnering with Demelza

We have been proudly supporting Demelza, an incredible charity helping families who have children with serious or terminal conditions, throughout their often-limited time together.

This week marks Children’s Hospice Week, the one week in the year dedicated to raising awareness for children’s hospice and palliative care services across the UK, and the seriously ill children and young people they support. With our Charity Partner, Demelza Hospice Care, we are determined to raise awareness and funds for children in need this week and beyond.

Since the start of this year, we have been proudly supporting Demelza, an incredible charity helping families who have children with serious or terminal conditions, throughout their often-limited time together.

Each year, Demelza Hospice Care for Children supports over 750 babies, children and young people and 4,000 individual family members across the South East of England who have a range of different and complex conditions. Demelza provides specialist care from early diagnosis for as long as it is needed. When a family desperately needs support, this charity can give them the time, space and attention to cope.

We are proud to be supporting Demelza through a range of fundraising initiatives:

Jumping from the clouds

On Tuesday 14th June at the Headcorn Aerodrome in Kent, Our CEO, Ben Snee, and Head of IT and Business Solutions, Simon Boyley, made it above the clouds at over 10,000 feet for their first ever skydive, all to raise awareness and funds for Demelza.

Whilst there may have been some inevitable nerves on the way up, our two skydivers made it safely to the ground having raised an amazing £5,270 - exceeding the original £3,000 target. As our Charity Committee have pledged to match this amount, we are delighted to see this figure rise to £10,540 (and counting!).

Ben Snee said: "The skydive was a fantastically exhilarating experience for a wonderful cause.  We jumped out of the plane at 12,300 feet and experienced free-fall for around 40 seconds, reaching terminal velocity of 123 mph in 4 seconds, before the parachute (thankfully) opened and we drifted down serenely over the lovely Kent countryside. All in all, it was an amazing experience, but more importantly, we have been able to raise over £10,000 for the charity - thank you so much to everyone who has supported us with this outstanding generosity!"

Our second brave sykdiver, Simon Boyley said: "My position on skydiving has always been absolutely not! However, the opportunity to push the limits of my comfort zone whilst raising funds for such a brilliant charity was hard to refuse. We had stunning weather on the day, blue skies and visibility for miles, which I was able to take in once the parachute was safely open. It was such an intense rush. I'm proud that I took part, raising funds for Demelza, but I can firmly say that in the future I intend to remain safely onboard any aircraft!"

There’s still time to donate in support of Ben and Simon’s skydive, please click here if you would like to do so.

Management Team volunteering

Earlier this week, our Management team donned their gardening attire as they spent the day volunteering in the gardens at one of Demelza’s beautiful hospices in East Sussex.

The staff at the hospice were keen to ensure the gardens were at their best, so that the families Demelza supports, can use them during the summer holidays. The team, which consisted of Ben Snee, CEO, Paul Pollard, Front Office Business Manager, Will Habberfield, COO, Helen Whelan, Head of Risk, Abbie Williams, Management Assistant, Emma Bolton, Front Office Support Manager and Debbie Hofford, Executive Assistant, arrived ready to be put through their paces by Demelza’s gardener.

"The work that Demelza does is incredible so it was very rewarding to feel that in some small way, we had been able to contribute to the support the team provides to the children and their families" said Paul Pollard.

The team helped to put some finishing touches to existing planters, cut sleepers, created and built new planters and a bench, moved masses of soil from the car park to the garden and filled planters in the garden. They also sanded and varnished the entrance gates to the hospice and one of the family benches in the garden ready for use.

Will Habberfield described the volunteering as "a fantastic day for such an amazing charity. It was humbling to hear first-hand the work Demelza do for the families they support. To be able to offer a little time to work on their garden which the families will use to create memories was a really rewarding experience."

Anyès Sineux-Reading, Corporate Partnership Manager at Demelza, said "These vital funds will pay for expert clinical nursing care and family support and could pay for our Care at home service, our art, music and sensory therapies or our sibling activity groups.

Everyone at LGT is involved and behind our partnership, their personal engagement and financial contribution this year is so appreciated for the children and families who need us today and tomorrow and in the years to come."

Dodgeball for Demelza

Our annual Charity Dodgeball tournament returned in May with 30 teams competing at London’s Honourable Artillery Company to raise funds for Demelza. Teams of six players competed in fancy dress throughout the afternoon, with the event raising £23,019, which has been matched by our Charity Committee. The total amount is enough to fund a specialist nurse and make a huge difference to the lives of seriously or terminally ill children.

Anyès Sineux-Reading added "LGT Wealth Management is a wonderful supporter to Demelza, and they have shown their commitment from the very beginning – organising a fun quiz followed by their dodgeball tournament with clients and intermediaries, staff and teams taking part in our Going the Distance walk, CEO and senior staff jumping out of a plane and taking on volunteering days with gusto - in our warehouse and the gardens all to help to improve the lives of the children and families who Demelza supports."

We are delighted to support Demelza and champion their mission that every child and young person who has a serious or terminal condition should receive the care and attention they need.

We have many more exciting plans in the pipeline to further support this great cause.
