From Gridiron to graduation, a touchdown to success

The LGT Gridiron Grant is a first of its kind sports scholarship offering full university tuition to two students to any UK university or vocational programme of their choice. We are delighted to see this year’s recipients, Miles Butt and Paris McLeggan-Milner, head off to university this autumn.

The scholarship was launched in 2018 by LGT and the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars, as an opportunity to give back to the American football community within the UK and to further its progression as a sport. Our NFL partnership stems from mutual transatlantic interests and a shared commitment to grassroots American football.

Beyond the end zone

All young people who are part of JagTag (a simplified version of touch American Football invented by the Jacksonville Jaguars) JagTag Xtra Time or associated with a British American Football Association (BAFA) team anywhere in the country are eligible to apply for the grant.

Two winners are selected each year via a detailed application and interview process involving a panel from LGT and the Jaguars UK team. Applicants’ commitment to the pursuit of further education, along with their overall desire to attain success, are assessed.

Game-changers

This year’s recipients of the grant are Miles Butt and Paris McLeggan-Milner who are attending the University of Nottingham and University of Hertfordshire respectively.

Miles grew up in the South of England and his childhood love of rugby has transferred seamlessly in recent years to Defence in American football, where he plays Linebacker and Safety. Commended by the judges for his confidence, enthusiasm and compassion, Miles said,

Winning the Gridiron Grant allows me to further both my athletic and academic careers while alleviating the financial burden of going to university and wholeheartedly focus on my sport and studies.

Paris, meanwhile, grew up in London and has played for the London Warriors and the South London Renegades. Noted for her mentorship and coaching of younger players, and commitment to giving back to her community, judges felt that Paris embodies the spirit of the LGT Gridiron Grant. Paris said,

This Grant means a lot to me. It means that I’d be able to further my education and focus on my studies and not have to worry about the financials. With the degree that I get, I’ll be able to give back to my community by encompassing all the things I will have learnt over the four years at university.

At LGT, we are delighted to see the Grant being awarded to two such deserving candidates and wish them all the very best in their first year at university.
